The Unteraar Glacier is between 800 and 1100m wide. The two striking peaks are the Lauteraarhorn (4042m) and the Schreckhorn (4078m). The glacier gate is currently located at an altitude of approx. 1950m. Since 2014 the glacier should have become a bit shorter again.

25.08.2017: At the bottom left, the mighty ice block (dead ice) can be seen, which lost contact with the retreating Unteraar Glacier (Unteraargletscher) around 2016. See also comparison photos of location 1 and 2.
These repeat photos show an overview of the glacier forefield and the end of Unteraar Glacier (Unteraargletscher). The width of the glacier is about 700m. The accuracy of the before/after photo comparison could be better.

After the advice of a mountain guide we visited the Unteraar Glacier in August 2017. In summer 2017 the Unteraar glacier retreated by 200-300m. What remained was an impressive piece of dead ice (to be seen on the right in the panorama photo, with the person in front of the piece of ice as a size comparison), which now stands alone and abandoned in the glacier forefield and should completely melt down in the next 1-2 years. Many thanks to the mountain guide for the hint!

The iceberg (dead ice) in front of the Unteraar Glacier (see location 2, far right in the picture) has lost considerable mass since the end of August 2017. On the photos of 25.8.2017 and 25.9.2018 a person can be seen in front of the iceberg (dead ice).

11.06.2022: The photograph of 11.6.2022 was taken from the same boulder as the photograph of 2017 - 2019. After 2019, the boulder was moved about 20-30m downstream by a flood and/or debris flow. The accuracy of the fit is correspondingly poor.

These photos were taken from an approximately 4m high mound of debris, which has solidified well in the last few years. You can see the outflow of the young Aare as well as the dead ice covered with a lot of debris at the foot of the northern flank of the desorstock. The dead ice also shows some inclined ice walls. These ice walls should accelerate the melting of the ice.

25.07.2024: The area in the foreground is only flooded when the water level is very high. The river now flows further south than it did in 2019. A lot of dead ice has melted since then. Approximately in the southeast, a person is standing on the bank of the Aare.
These repeat photos were taken from a large boulder located not far from the westernmost of the southern glacier gates. In the 2019 photo, a boulder can be seen on the left. This boulder toppled between 10.7.2019 and 4.7.2020. This probably as a result of a flood.

25.07.2024: Presumably during the severe storms at the end of June 2024, the large stone slab on which the tripod for taking the panoramic photos is usually set up was washed away. As a result, on 25. July 2024, it was no longer possible to position the camera in exactly the same place to take the photo. Nevertheless, it is still possible to see how the terrain and the glacial streams have changed.
