Before/after comparison photo of Great Aletsch Glacier (Swiss Alps)

Height: Approx. 1700-3800m above sea level
Location: Riederalp, Aletsch, Valais, Switzerland Show glacier on: Swiss map... GLAMOS...
The Great Aletsch Glacier (Grosser Aletschgletscher) is the largest glacier in the Alps. At the Konkordiaplatz (approx. 2700m above sea level) several mighty ice streams flow together to the Great Aletsch Glacier. The ice stream then flows over a distance of about 13.5km towards the Rhone valley. At Konkordiaplatz, the glacier ice is said to be more than 800m thick.

Horizontal distance to the glacier tongue: approx. 1.7km.
Horizontal distance to the point where the glacier turns left: approx. 7km.
The light-coloured rock, which rises from the glacier tongue to the right, is the landslide area that made headlines around 2017 and led to the closure of hiking trails.

The photos of this comparison were taken from the rock plate Platta. We would not have thought that with the size of the ice stream (at least about 1.3 km wide) the changes are so well visible after almost 8 years.
