11.07.2022: Observations Chaltwasser Glacier (Valais Alps)

On 11.7.2022 we made the following observations on the Chaltwater Glacier:

Chaltwasser glacier

The northern glacial lake can be seen at the foot of the Glescher tongue.

Glacier tongue

The glacier tongue barely reached into the two glacial lakes.

As the lake was 100% free of snow and ice, we had to cross the glacier in the area of the tongue. This was easily doable via a bridge. To the right of the person, a black area can be seen. This is the Randkluft, which can be seen in the next photo.

The level of the northern glacial lake is 1-2m higher than that of the southern glacial lake. The northern lake is currently drained into the southern lake via a channel under the glacier.
