Subglacial meltwater channel
A subglacial meltwater channel is located between the glacier ice and the bedrock of the glacier (= glacier bed).
Approx. 1.5m high subglacial meltwater channel (Kanderfirn, 11.9.2016)
Since the meltwater channel is located entirely above the glacier bed, it is referred to as an R channel (Röthlisberger channel).
At the time of shooting, the channel had no meltwater. About 1.5 hours later the canal was flooded. This means that the amount of melt water varies greatly depending on the time of day and season.
Former meltwater channel eroded into the rock of the glacier bed (Gamchi glacier, 14.8.2019).
Since the entire meltwater channel was (probably) in the glacier bed, it is referred to as an N channel (Nye channel).
