Snow measurements and amount of snow (Glaciology)
Every April/May, snow depth and snow density are determined on around 15 glaciers in the Swiss Alps by means of area-wide soundings. The results are then extrapolated to the entire glacier surface.
Above-average snow amounts in one year do not indicate a growth of the glacier in the current warming phase of the climate. They create good preconditions, but in recent decades these have been cancelled out by excessively high summer temperatures, so that the glaciers have continued to shrink even after very snowy winters.

Shown is the relative deviation of the snow amount in a single year
from the average of the last 10 years of the respective glacier. Colors indicate
extrapolation to the whole of Switzerland to show the regional differences.
