Rock glacier

Synonyms: Block glacier
Rock glaciers consist of a mixture of debris and ice, which moves very slowly (= a few centimeters to several decimeters / year) downhill.
Block glaciers often have a steep front at the lower end, which can be quite unstable and rocky.
A distinction is made between active, inactive and fossil rock glaciers.
Active rock glaciers still contain ice and are moving downslope.
Inactive rock glaciers contain only so little ice that flow is no longer possible.
Fossil rock glaciers no longer contain ice.
Rock glaciers never reach the size of a real glacier. Normally they are a few hundred meters long, up to a hundred meters wide and 30-50m thick.
