Glacier gate, glacier portal

This glacier gate had collapsed about three weeks later.
Possible cause: On the south side of the glacier there are large amounts of dead ice covered with debris in the area of the glacier gate (and further east). This dead ice is no longer supported by the ice to the east of the glacier gate and therefore slides slowly towards the glacier stream. This caused pressure to build up on the ice in the area of the glacier gate. At first the ice blocks in the glacier stream visible on the photo came loose. Finally, the pressure was so great that the glacier gate collapsed.
